OBLIGATORY EXPOSITION(THANKFULLY SHORT)

There is a legend. Everybody has heard it. About the Crows. How they can bring you back. When it's for love and vengeance. Everybody thinks they know the rules, too. What everybody forgets is that rules are made to be broken.

NOT AS LATE AS YOU THOUGHT

The velvety rustle of ebony wings in the midnight air. They speak of times long forgotten and rules written in the sand. She hears this and so much more as that which was taken by force is returned by friendship to her body. Where Death once ruled Life has declared a temporary mutiny.

A smile crosses her face as she opens her eyes. It would take more than being gutted and falling ten stories to keep this girl down. She laid a hand on her stomach, damp, but intact. Her smile grew as she turned to the large, dark, bird perched beside her. It almost seemed to smile back.

"We got ourselves a job to do. Don't we, little Birdy?" Faith asked, as she sat up.

The Crow cocked it's head as if thinking it over. Faith heard something. It wasn't a voice, but it wasn't meaningless sound either. She realized it was the Crow. It explained why she was back. She stopped smiling, thought for a moment, and started smiling again.

"I guess you're right, Birdy. I guess doing what I do best for good is just as fun as for evil. I'm never going to be a sugar plum, like little miss bring a knife to a fist fight, though. We clear on that?" Faith asked her strange new friend.

The Crow turned its head so it was looking her directly in the eyes with its left eye. It Cawed and fluffed its wings. Faith heard something along the lines of, "You wouldn't have been brought back if you were soft."

She suddenly stood and did a flip off the back of the moving truck. She hurried to a nearby alley and waited for Birdy to catch up. That's when she heard the noise at the other end of the alley.

PLACES TO GO, PEOPLE TO KILL

Birdy landed on Faith's shoulder just as Elaine got her chance to scream. Elaine had been walking home from her job at the diner, when this guy sprang out of an alley and grabbed her. He had put his hand over her mouth and obviously intended to rape her. She had fought him and had worked her mouth out from behind his hand and started to scream.

The living dead girl and her carrion loving companion turned as one towards the screams. Faith turned to look at Birdy, as Birdy turned to look at her.

"This one has to be a gimme, my feathered friend," Faith said, and Birdy agreed.

She picked up an old lead pipe as she walked down the alley. Without warning she swung the old pipe, baseball bat style, at the back of the rapist. A loud, wet, snap sounded from his body as he began screaming. Elaine scrambled out from under him, and cast a quick glance at the pale death masque of a face her savior had before running home.

screamed at the world in general.

"Uh, who you talking to their?" Willy asked as he sat their drinks on the table, having decided that carding someone who could squash your head between their hands was bad for business.

"I was talking to Birdy. Do you mind?" She said giving Willy a look so nasty he nearly wet himself.

"Not at all. I'll just leave you two alone," Willy said, and hurried back behind the bar.

Birdy had hi beak in the tequila and Faith took a slug of her beer. She wasn't really mad at Birdy, he had been, more or less, a sweetheart from the beginning. She wasn't even really mad. She was just frustrated. She felt like there was more to her coming back then what Birdy had told her.

"Birdy, I'm not just here to kill the Mayor, am I? It's not just the fact that he screwed me over with his choice of poison that got me back, like you said on the truck, is it?" Faith asked as she took another pull on her beer. Birdy looked at her, and seemed to give her an apologetic shrug, like he was saying, "You're right, and I wish I could tell you more, but I can't."

"Come on, Birdy, I deserve better than that, after all we've been through," Faith said, in a plaintive tone.

Suddenly Birdy spoke. Not izzR?Ĉ~?ÄAÄC~ ntStaptk.htmfifFilesFolderd)es)TEXThbwr¾îp®–Ã?Ä?Ä?Ä?ÄSCLCoord0000?ÄAÄ?ÄC~?Ä?Ä¡Ä?Ĉ~3Ä1.0(1.0, Copyright Apple Computer, Inc. 1998&Ä ntStaptk.htmÄ1.0 Mac OS 8.5zzRÖÃrRversftag*aÖ`7f character, and I saw something worth saving in you," He said in a gravelly, accentless voice.

Faith was near tears. She reached out and pulled the startled bird into a big hug.

"That is the single nicest thing anyone has ever said to me Birdy. I only hope I can live up to the potential you think I have," She said as she started to cry, and let him go.

"Hey, don't be going soft on me, kid, I need you in full tilt kill mode if we're going to frag that giant snake tomorrow," Birdy said.

"I know, I know, I'll be ready. What are we going to do, though?" Faith asked, wiping her eyes.

"I got an idea, but you are not going to like it," Birdy said, scratching a circle on the table with his right claw.

"How bad can it be?" Faith asked.

OLD SLAYERS DIE HARD OR EXACTLY WHERE DO YOU WANT ME TO BURY THE HATCHET?

Buffy, Willow, Oz, Xander, and Giles were all in the living room of the mansion, sitting around the fireplace and trying to think of a way, other than sacrificing Buffy, to help Angel. A large Black bird came in and perched on the lip of the archway that lead further into the house.

It looked at the Scooby gang and said, in a menacing voice, "Nevermore."

Then as they all stared at it in horror it broke into gales of laughter. It was joined by the hysterical laughter of a figure that entered the room. The entire gang was shocked into silence by the appearance of the rogue Slayer, Buffy had told them was dead.

"That was great, Birdy. I really owe you for that one. It's been a real bitch of a day, what with me being murdered and all, but that put paid to damn near all of it. The looks on these dip shits' faces covers the rest," Faith said , wiping tears from her eyes as Birdy returned to his perch on her shoulder.

"I killed you. How can you be here?" Buffy asked

"I guess murder doesn't take like it used to, little miss lapsed moral superiority. Or maybe you should have followed the number one rule of monster movies: Always make sure it's dead. I was, but it's just a good, solid policy to have," Faith said as she walked over and jumped up onto a wooden chair, balancing her toes on the backrest.

Faith fell into a crouch on the back of the chair, maintaining perfect balance. She smiled at the room and started talking again.

"Birdy here, he's the one what brought me back," she said, cocking her head towards the Crow on her shoulder, "said something interesting on the way over here. I wanted to ask you about it, miss thang.

"He brought up the rather interesting query of whether I would have had a better chance at understanding from you if I had been a broody vamp with an ass you could bounce quarters off of. What do you think? Was it because I didn't have a history, over a hundred years long, of murder and torture going for me, or was it because I didn't ice Giles' girlfriend and put her in his bed that you weren't going to give me a second chance? Maybe it was because you hadn't gotten any from me. Was that the problem, that I wasn't putting out? All you had to do was ask, I'm a girl of the nineties, B. Or maybe was would be a better word. You can answer these in any order you like," Faith said with a sweet smile.

Xander didn't want to, but he couldn't help laughing. Now that it was behind him the thing with the bird was funny, and what Faith had just said, about Angel at least, was what he had thought for awhile now. They gave Deadboy way to much wiggle room as Setting up your modem

ous Buffy, in the hope of replacing Evelyn. Instead of a legend she found a girl, younger than her no less, who wasn't to crazy about the new girl. Faith decided to stay, she had plenty of experience banging her head on a glass ceiling with her mother, and figured Buffy couldn't be that bad.

"One day a woman, who looks unfortunately similar to Evelyn Grant, appeared in the town of Sunnydale. Faith thought she had finally found her family, a mother that wouldn't hurt her or leave her. She, of course, is wrong. Gwendolyn Post betrays her like so many others have.

"I'll skip her continuing attempts to win the approval of the resolutely closed system in Sunnydale. She eventually seeks acceptance in Evil, figuring that they take pretty much all applicants, plus if she's going to be treated like shit she might as well have it done by the pros.

"Now, her story would end with her being murdered by the girl she idolized to save a man who was technically already dead, if it weren't for me. My story and her's meet at the moment that Buffy killed her. I was sitting in the world between life and death when I saw this bright light pass by on the road to Hell. I realized that it was the soul of someone that deserved a second chance they would never get. So, in a split second I sacrificed everything my people believe in, to break every rule, and save her. I brought her back because someone had to. I hope I can help her find the peace that exists in the center of all living things. I figured that the last people to hurt her would be a good place to start the healing, plus I figured you might need a little help with that giant snake," Birdy finished.

BLOOD IS THE LIFE

After Buffy and Birdy left the room Faith pulled out the hunting knife she had taken from the store. She positioned her wrist over Angel's mouth and sliced it open. As the first drop touched his tongue he reached up and pulled her wrist to his mouth and began drinking.

"Drink up, I don't need it anymore. I hope this can still heal you. I don't know if I'm still steeped in Slayer juices, or if they left with death. As much as I hate to admit it I don't hate you.

"If you tell anyone what I'm about to tell you, I'll get more of whatever that stuff I shot you with was and dose you again. Well, here it izzRœ__š___›__›___š___ ntStumdm.htmfifFilesFolderd)es)TEXThbwr¾îp®úÃ÷š÷›÷œÍ•œ÷÷œ¸—È__›__›_œ__›__›____›____œœ____›__œœ_ÅŞŸœœœœœš3Ä1.0(1.0, Copyright Apple Computer, Inc. 1998&Ä ntStumdm.htmÄ1.0 Mac OS 8.5zzRÖÃrRversftag*aÖ\7, but whenever they tried to 'include' me it had that stench of pity to it. You know the way kids act when their mom makes them invite you to their birthday party.

"I don't hate individual people, but I do hate certain groups. Not by race or religion, but by behavior. I hate people like my mom, which is a long story with a bad ending. The only group I hate more than people like my mom are people that are nice to you out of pity. I don't care if you like me or not, but if you are going to like me, like me because of me, not because my mom used to put cigarettes out on me. That isn't a basis for friendship.

"I did like Xander, I was even leaning towards love with him. He reminds me a lot of Evelyn. They both have that same spunk, that 'go ahead and pull the trigger, everybody dies' attitude. I really screwed things up with him though.

"That's what I do, I test people. I keep pushing, just to see if they really mean it when they're nice, until they can't take it and leave. Evelyn was the only one to ever pass my tests, and one of your kind killed her. The thing is I'm not sure if it was me or Buffy and the Scooby gang that failed this time.

"I guess I know, deep down in my heart, why Birdy brought me back. It was the same thing Evelyn tried to lead me to. Redemption. I had always been looking for vengeance, to somehow get back at someone for the unending string of raw deals my life had been. But if you can't fight city hall, you sure as hell can't fight the universe. Love, Hate, Vengeance, Redemption, It's all so huge. Does it ever get any easier?" Faith asked of whoever could answer.

"No, but in a weird way that's why you keep fighting. If you stop, that's when it hits you. But if you keep going, keep fighting, you find a strange sort of freedom. I think it was Thomas Paine who said 'What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is dearness alone that gives everything its value.' I think that pretty much sums up anything I would have to say on the subject," Angel said as he sat up and released her wrist.

"How long were you able to hear me?" Faith asked, mortified that she may have let someone in the shell she had taken a lifetime to build.

"Long enough to hear that you are probably better person than anyone will ever know, and long enough to realize Xander will be missing out if he doesn't forgive you. If you told even half of the things you told me just now to the people out there they would have let you in in a second," Angel said.

"I don't like talking about myself. Besides, I'm sure Birdy has already told them more than I would want them to know. I just know he told them at least about Mom, probably the rest of it , too. Please don't tell them anything I said?" she asked the ensouled vampire in a desperate tone.

In that instant Angel saw the sweet, nervous school girl that Faith could have been. He realized that, like him, she was a victim of cruel fate and foolish choices. They were quite a tragic pair, he thought with a smile. "It's the least I can do for the girl who saved my life, and a fellow traveller on the winding road to redemption," he said swinging his legs off the bed.

"You know, you aren't so bad for a blood sucking fiend," Faith said.

"And you, my dear lady, are terrific, as Psychopathic muderesses go," Angel said as he threw on a shirt.

"Friends?" Faith said, throwing her arms wide.

"Friends," Angel agreed, hugging her tightly.

fully clad, and... and you aren't wearing anything under your shirt..," Xander trailed off as Faith finished removing her shirt. She started on her pants as she answered him.

"I don't think I've grown anything new since the last time you saw me naked, so I figure it will be alright. As to the nothing under the shirt, my bra got torn up in all the stabbings tonight, and since I was wearing Army/Navy surplus I figured I'd go commando. Now grab some bombs and start hooking me up before you blow a gasket," Faith said, kicking off her pants.

Xander went and grabbed the upper body sections of the bomb. He hooked on the arm pieces first. He then awkwardly went about strapping on the front and back torso pieces. He then made the connections between the arm pieces and the torso.

"You know, this is a really brave and noble thing you're doing," Xander said shyly, not knowing how to talk to this nearly naked girl.

"Thanks for thinking I would be capable of such a poignant sacrifice, but trust me, I got a plan," Faith answered.

"Alright, You give me a sign from above, if you make it. There, You. Are. Done," Xander said as he finished hooking up the bombs and setting the detonator.

"Thanks a lot, Xander. For the work here, and for giving me another chance. I'm telling you, don't worry about me. I'll be okay. I'm nothing, if not a survivor," Faith said, as she began to get dressed over the bombs.

"I know. I just can't help worrying. I don't have many friends, and I don't want to loose one," Xander said, drawing a circle on the floor with the toe of his shoe.

"No matter what happens I'll always be with you. Never forget that. Now, Does this bomb make me look fat?," Faith asked, doing a little spin after she finished getting dressed.

"You look gorgeous," Xander said, only half joking.

Faith threw her coat back on and strode over to where Xander was standing. She grabbed his face with both hands and pulled him into a deep, passionate kiss. She then pulled away and looked into his, not entirely unpleasantly, surprised face. A Cheshire grin broke across her porcelain white face as she said, "One for the road, Cowboy."

She then seemed to fade into the shadows. Xander just stood there with his mouth open. He wasn't sure how he felt about Faith, but he knew what ever he felt, it was powerful.

SUNRISE, A DEAD GIRL, AND THE BIRD THAT LOVES HER

Faith headed out the back door of the mansion. The sky was starting to pale as the sun got ready for its daily resurrection. She began walking to a hill that she knew, on the outskirts of town. She was overcome with a desire to lay in the grass, still damp with dew, and watch the sunrise. As she began to speed up to make it in time she felt a familiar weight settle on her shoulder.

"Where we going?" Birdy asked, speaking in her head again.

"I want to go watch the sunrise on this hill I know, but that wasn't what you meant, was it?" Faith asked, as they neared the hill.

"You are perceptive, I'll give you that, Kid," Birdy replied.

"As much as I would like to, I guess we can't stay here. Not for now, at least. I have too much I need to fix before I can rest. Maybe I can come back someday, though," She finished with a hopeful sigh.

"What do you mean 'I'? I'll be there the whole way. It's you and me for the long haul, Kid. And as to coming back, it depends on whether you got a good enough reason," Birdy said, and if she didn't know better Faith would have sworn he was smiling.

They reached the hill, and made it to the top just as the horizon started to turn pink. They both sat on the top of the hill in silence. The sky lit up and became a million different shades of red, yellow, orange, lavender, and pink.

"It's a little easier to see why you keep fighting in this light doesn't it?" Birdy asked.

"It makes me think there is a way out, a way to win," Faith replied, awe in her voice.

"You placed the bag, right?" Birdy asked.

"Yeah, on the roof. I got everything I'll need. At least the stuff I can fit in a bag," she said, thinking of what she had ahead of her and what she was leaving behind.

"Redemption isn't easy, but you passed the hardest test. You admitted you needed to find it. It's all over but the screaming, now," Birdy said, as much to himself as to his companion.

Setting up TCP/IP

To connect to the Internet, all computers use TCP/IP, a set of protocols for transferring data. You must set up TCP/IP on your computer before you can connect to the Internet.

To set up TCP/IP on your computer, you need to know (or know where to get) your computer's IP address and the subnet mask you should use. Your Internet service provider (ISP) or your network administrator can give you this information, or can tell you how to get it from a server on the network.

The setup options available in the TCP/IP control panel include connection by Ethernet, PPP, MacPPP, or MacIP and configuration manually or using a server such as BootP, DHCP, or RARP. (Your ISP or administrator will help you with configuration choices.)

Setting up TCP/IP can include selecting the following:
the connections by which your computer communicates with the network
whether to configure TCP/IP manually or by using a server
The choices you can make change depending on how your network is set up, your computer's features, and the networking software you have installed. If someone else set up your network connection, some choices may be locked so you cannot change them.

To set up TCP/IP, use the TCP/IP control panel.
